The world is facing the most serious geo-political crisis situation for several decades now.
The risk that this crisis will precipitate into a direct military confrontation between NATO and Russia, up to a nuclear war, is real.
Ukraine is the battleground that sees the future order of the global balance as at stake.
The USA is aiming for a military defeat of the Russian Federation, which would eliminate its character as a world power. The next step would be the political-military encirclement of China, the main danger for US unipolarity.
The anti-Chinese provocations on Taiwan, on the so-called spy balloons, on the alleged persecution of ethnic minorities, must be seen as part of the preparation of the American and European public opinion for the confrontation with the People’s Republic.
As NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg himself admits, the war actually started in 2014, when the freely elected Ukrainian government was overthrown by the Maidan Square “color revolution”, which led to the establishment of a pro-Western regime and nostalgic for Stepan Bandera’s pro-Nazi collaborationism.
The abolition of the rights of Russian-speaking Ukrainian minorities and the bloody repression caused a civil war which, according to the UN, resulted in the killing of 13,000 Russian-speaking Ukrainians, mostly civilians. Not to mention the outlawing of 11 opposition parties, first of all the Communist Party of Ukraine, which garnered more than 13% of the electoral consensus.
The Italian Communist Party calls for an immediate ceasefire; the cessation of arms shipments to Ukraine by the Italian government and other European governments; the start of peace talks as soon as possible.
We communists are fighting for Italy’s exit from NATO and for the dissolution of this imperialist political military bloc.
We communists are close to the brothers Mikhail and Alexander Kononovich, young Ukrainian communists who are the symbol of hundreds of other persecuted communists and democrats.
We are with the family of Andrea Rocchelli, an Italian photojournalist killed by the Ukrainian army in 2014, together with his interpreter, while documenting the attacks against the Russian-speaking population of Donbass.
There can be no true peace if a new multipolar world equilibrium is not established. The USA and NATO, on the contrary, aim, through the blood of the Ukrainian and Russian peoples, to reassert themselves for the next decades as the first and dominant global superpower.
In this context, the relaunch and strengthening of the role of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, China, India, South Africa) and their expansion to other countries, with a view to a new multipolar equilibrium, are essential.
Lula’s electoral victory in Brazil is a fundamental step in this direction.
In recent years we have witnessed a resurgence of leftist and popular movements that brought back or led progressive coalitions into government for the first time in Mexico, Honduras, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru.
US imperialism has not stood idly by.
The bloody coup d’état of 2019 against the legitimate government of Evo Morales in Bolivia demonstrated once again how much the USA is always willing to play all their cards in order not to lose control of their “backyard” and the role long-handed North American policy that the OAS (Organization of American States) continues to carry out.
The political and judicial persecution against Argentine Vice President Cristina Kirchner is a striking example of “lawfare”, i.e. the political use of the Judiciary by the internal oligarchy and imperialism in order to hinder and destabilize unwanted governments.
We have seen this with the judicial persecution of Lula and, in recent months, with that against the legitimate President of Peru Pedro Castillo, which paved the way for the conspiracy that led to his dismissal.
The Peruvian people are courageously facing the repression by the army and police, which has so far claimed close to a hundred lives. The white oligarchy does not accept that the popular classes and peasants are considered citizens with social and political rights. The Peruvian army, like those of other Latin American countries, has always been the armed wing of this privileged and racist minority.
The Bolivian government of MAS, which managed to win the elections again despite the attempts of the coup government to prevent its participation, is re-establishing the social reforms and the “buen vivir” introduced by Evo Morales, but the same fascist and racist right that provoked the coup of 2019 continues to carry out its seditious activity.
Chile was rocked in 2019 by a massive popular protest, anti-liberal and for the replacement of the “Constitution” inherited from the Pinochet dictatorship. The Carabinieri and the Police behaved once again as an occupying force, bloodily repressing the protests, with dead and blinded with shots of pellets fired at close range.
The main political results of the protest were the election of a constitutional convention with universal suffrage, called to draft a new Magna Carta and the election of a leftist president, Gabriel Boric, with two coalitions of left and centre-left in government, with three Communist ministers.
But the ebb of the popular movement, which since its inception was characterized by a strong distrust of all parties, has favored a political recovery of the right which, strengthened by the parliamentary balance but above all by the rejection of the new Constitution by 62% of the voters, is trying to block the government’s economic and social reforms.
We, the Italian Communist Party, are closely following what is happening in Latin America. We consider the experiences which, since 1998 with the electoral victory of comrade Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, have opened a new season of struggle against imperialism, for the self-determination of peoples and for the construction of Socialism of the XXI Century.
These experiences are different from each other and each responds to the conditions and the balance of power between the classes of each country.
They share the awareness that in order to emancipate themselves from the role of “backyard” of the USA they must combine their economic and political efforts, creating and strengthening economic, political and information community institutions. Commander Hugo Chavez Frias and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, to whose President Nicolas Maduro goes our support, have begun a fundamental work in this direction.
The example of Cuba, America’s first free territory, was and remains fundamental not only for the Latin American peoples but for all the peoples in the world who are fighting for freedom, justice, equality and socialism.
Bolivarian Venezuela, with its resources, its civic-military alliance and its Constitution is at the forefront of this continental process.
The experience of Cuba and Venezuela have always been in Uncle Sam’s sights. They are two fundamental building blocks not only for Latin America but for the global struggle against imperialism.
The Italian Communist Party is fighting against the illegal blockade imposed by the USA on Cuba and is at the side of comrades from all over Latin America.
