“NATO Was Built to Kill Communism — We Must Build to Defeat NATO”

Struggle Unity (Türkiye)

Friends, Comrades;

It is vital in the struggle against imperialism and capitalism to correctly define NATO as the war organization and military headquarters of imperialist states and governments, and to fully understand its founding purpose and function.

This is because one of the main points where social-chauvinist parties and organizations—who claim to stand on the side of communism, socialism, or any part of the left thought line but actually side with their own bourgeoisie—confuse the consciousness of the world working class and the oppressed peoples is precisely this issue. These social-chauvinists, who cannot openly and directly side with their own bourgeois classes, in order to fulfill their duties to the global bourgeoisie, on the one hand conceal NATO’s true anti-communist nature and mission, and on the other hand reduce NATO to an ordinary military organization so as to obscure how its dissolution and defeat could give a powerful impetus to the revolutionary struggle of the world working class.

We clearly see the most concrete example of this in the war waged by the Russian Federation against NATO and the imperialist states behind it through the fascist regime in Ukraine. According to these social-chauvinists, of which there are many examples in Turkey, there is no difference between the defeat of NATO and the defeat of the Russian Army in terms of the interests of the world working class and oppressed peoples! Who wins, they claim, does not matter for the development of global social revolutions. Therefore, they propose a policy of “neutrality” to the working class and oppressed peoples of their countries. In reality, by doing so, these social-chauvinists serve their own bourgeoisie and the global bourgeoisie. This is exactly the case with parties within the European Communist Movement, such as KKE in Greece and TKP in Türkiye.

Friends, Comrades;

Undoubtedly, this is a swamp, and the only way to avoid falling into it is by correctly understanding the nature of our era and the fundamental contradiction that shapes all the politics and actions of the conflicting classes.

As early as 1917, Lenin declared with the October Revolution that our era is one of the collapse of imperialism and the rise of proletarian revolutions. This truth is known and even occasionally repeated by everyone, including the parties like KKE and TKP in the “European Communist Action”. However, they give little thought to its decisive impact on the class war between the global bourgeoisie and the global proletariat. Yet this is the crucial issue. The emergence of socialism on the stage of history as a social system after the Great October Revolution has determined all the policies of the global bourgeoisie and imperialists. Since that historical turning point, the main goal of the global bourgeoisie and the imperialists has been to eliminate the “specter of communism.” All their policies and preparations have been shaped by this goal.

British imperialism, right after the October Revolution, started organizing Islamic reactionary movements that emphasized religion to fight against communism. This is the origin of the “Green Belt” strategy aimed at encircling socialist countries. It is no coincidence that the same British imperialism decided to support the establishment of a Zionist state in Palestine with the Balfour Declaration immediately after the October Revolution. Nor is it a coincidence that fascism appeared shortly after the October Revolution—first in Italy and Bulgaria, and then in its most developed form in Germany. All these reactions and efforts were meant to wipe out socialism, which emerged in 1917 as the herald of a new era, off the face of the Earth.

If we take the Great October Revolution as a starting point, it is clear that the global bourgeoisie and imperialist finance capital have since clung to every form of reaction and allied themselves with it to oppose the world working class and the oppressed peoples. This is what Lenin referred to when he said that the dominance of monopoly capital leads to political reaction, or in other words, “reaction in every sphere.”

Fascism, defined as the most brutal and fanatical dictatorship of the largest factions of monopoly capital, can be examined from many angles. But what ties all these aspects together is its anti-communism. Fascism is a form of state developed by finance capital in response to the era of transition to communism that began with the October Revolution. Anti-communism is the essence of fascism.

The fact that German fascism—Hitler—with both direct and indirect support from the imperialists attacked the Soviet Union was not primarily about territorial conquest but about erasing socialism from the world. In this sense, calling the Second World War an “imperialist war of division” is incomplete and therefore incorrect. This war was essentially initiated with anti-communist aims and goals.

Friends, Comrades;

The reason we emphasize these simple yet historically crucial facts, which we all know but must keep reminding ourselves of, is to show how the fight against communism has shaped the policies and actions of all governments and states of imperialist finance capital and the global bourgeoisie.

NATO stands before us as the continuously developed instrument of this aim and goal. Yes, NATO is a military and war organization. Everyone knows this—even the imperialists accept it. So, recognizing this fact alone is not enough. What matters is revealing the essence and founding purpose of this war organization, and enlightening the working class and oppressed peoples on this issue. What is this essence? The essence is that NATO is an anti-communist organization—founded and developed as a war and provocation machine against communism.

When we bring this essence to light, we can better understand how deeply social-chauvinist the parties and organizations within the “European Communist Action” are, when they do not side with NATO’s defeat in its war with Russia. For a party that claims to act in the name of communism, refusing to support the defeat of a war organization founded against communism is pure social-chauvinism. Therefore, calling KKE and its follower TKP “social-chauvinist” is simply stating the concrete truth.

We know the political and social characteristics of the years in which NATO was founded. NATO was born from the idea of suppressing socialism, social revolutions, and the uprisings of the working class and oppressed peoples right after the Great October Revolution. Its foundations were laid by British imperialists while the smoke of war still lingered—at a time when the Red Army had just crushed fascism.

In line with its founding purpose, NATO’s primary duty is to prevent the spread of communism, keep socialist countries under constant threat of war, attack them when the opportunity arises, and suppress uprisings and revolutions of the working class and oppressed peoples against imperialism, fascism, and capitalism. Of course, it also fulfills other duties, such as bombing and destroying governments that oppose the “full annexation” policies of imperialist states—at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives. These bloody war and provocation actions include the Bosnian war; the bombings of Yugoslavia, Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan; the dismemberment of Syria by religious fascist gangs; and most recently, the war against Russia via Ukrainian fascists. All of NATO’s actions serve its founding aim: fighting communism and suppressing revolutions, uprisings, and social transformation.

Friends, Comrades;

NATO’s anti-communist, anti-worker, and anti-labor class character and essence are also its weak points; its Achilles’ heel. Because no war organization, no army can win without the support of workers and laborers. That is why NATO, which has drawn upon itself not the support but the hatred, hostility, and anger of the peoples of the world, is doomed to defeat. As we saw in the example of Ukraine, imperialists and NATO try to conduct war by gathering religious fascists and neo-Nazis from around the world. By uniting all forms of reaction, they wage war against the world working class and laboring peoples. But in vain! Even with 32 state armies under the NATO umbrella, NATO and the Ukrainian fascist regime are being defeated by Russia.

To prevent a decisive defeat, they are now seeking to provoke a full-scale world war. But the world working class and laboring peoples are responding to this quest with rebellions, uprisings, revolutions, and revolutionary attempts. Look at the uprising that erupted in California, the heart of the USA, with an atmosphere of civil war. Look at the European streets shaken by protests and demonstrations.

That’s why we say with great confidence: we will win; victory is ours; victory belongs to the world working class and oppressed peoples!

No one can stop humanity’s march toward communism!
