Unite to win

Comrades, this event takes place at a time of crucial importance for the world struggle against imperialism.
Our struggle is becoming more significant every day, as people everywhere are faced with the hard truth that they simply cannot obtain a secure supply of basic necessaries under their present economic conditions – never mind being able to achieve for themselves the peaceful enjoyment of a useful and fulfilling life.
To the esteemed delegates in this hall, I bring greetings from Britain, one of the oldest imperial powers and at one time the most powerful. In my country, a tiny class of billionaire finance capitalists still profits enormously by using the wealth accumulated over generations to carry on plundering the resources and exploiting the labour-power of the globe.
Yet in this same country, the mass of poor workers are suffering greatly from the effects of the global economic crisis – a crisis that has been exacerbated by our rulers’ aggressive economic and military warfare, and by their refusal to put in place any measures to help those who are bearing the brunt of a crisis that was not of their making.
Of course, we know that the burden of this crisis is falling most heavily on the poorest around the world, just as it is falling most heavily onto the poorest workers within British society. Still, both inside Britain and across the world, the same message is making itself felt more plainly every day: this system does not care about you; it cannot help you; something must be done.
Standing in Caracas today, we are reminded of the long history of oppression – and resistance – of the peoples on your continent.
We remember the crimes of colonisers from Spain, Portugal and Holland, who were replaced in their turn by the equally criminal and even more ruthless modern imperialists – the finance capitalists of Britain and the USA.
In much of the world, the USA rose to the position of public enemy number one only after two world wars had fatally weakened the powers of old Europe. Even then, it was some time before many newly-liberated nations understood that the old empires had been replaced by a new one; before they detected the dagger behind the back of the gangster whose hand appeared to be stretched out in friendship.
In this part of the world, the story is a different one. Here, life long ago revealed the fascistic face that hides beneath the democracy-loving mask of Uncle Sam. Two centuries ago, US president James Monroe set out his famous doctrine for the Americas, claiming for his masters the sole right to loot and control the resources and politics of every part of the western hemisphere.
From that day to this, the history of Latin America and the Caribbean has been a story of the subversion of democracy and the denial of the people’s will.
From assassinations to mysterious illnesses and plane crashes; from the buying or overturning of elections to the control of media, judicial and military institutions; from outright invasions and occupations to the funding of vicious mercenaries and proxies to drown popular movements in blood; from the direct overthrow of popular governments to their slow strangulation by economic blockade, the USA has made it clear that for as long as it has the power to prevail, the masses of this continent will be allowed no peace but the peace of the grave.
And to what end was all this directed? Did some higher human purpose justify these relentless assaults, this seemingly endless trail of suffering? No. It was only to secure and boost the profits of US monopolies: of the United Fruit Company, of Texaco, of Chevron, of Monsanto, of Pfizer.
For such an end, there is no human cost the imperialists consider to be too great. Understanding this simple truth is the key to understanding our own tasks. We must give up on the idea of persuading or reforming our oppressors. It cannot be done.
Marx long ago explained that in the present economic system, the capitalist becomes the personification of his capital, and acts relentlessly and solely in its interests. He cannot be appealed to on the basis of humane or rational logic.
And what is it that his capital desires? Only to expand. To be given an opportunity to exploit labour-power in order to make a profit and grow. Today, when the hoards of accumulated capital have become unimaginably vast, the need to keep finding new avenues for their reinvestment is driving the owners of those capital funds into a frenzy.
And all the while, the rulers of our world are getting richer at the expense of the rest of humanity. Their joy is built upon our misery, and they have created a huge machinery for the division and suppression of the people in order to maintain their privilege and power.
Their economic system and their machinery of suppression must be destroyed.
As a British socialist, I represent that part of the British working class that is already striving for liberation and socialism; which has understood this message and is doing what it can to help the rest of our class understand it too.
And, as socialists living at the heart of the imperialist world, in the belly of the beast, we remember the words of the great Lenin, that master of revolutionary theory and practice, whose Bolshevik party was the first to show humanity that the workers could be organised into a truly independent force, that the imperialists could be defeated, and that a new world could be built.
Lenin taught us that, in the struggle against our imperialist rulers, we must unite with the hundreds of millions of oppressed peoples around the world who are struggling against the same enemy. He repeatedly stressed that no one who claims the title of socialist can fail in this duty. And the Russian revolution gave us the proof that our struggle will be victorious if we succeed in this aim, and will be doomed to defeat if we do not.
Friends, we do not support one another’s struggles out of feelings of sympathy or charity. We do not strive to unite out of humanitarianism, although we feel our common humanity very deeply. We unite with one another because we must; because we face the same enemy and must fight together if we are fighting to win and not merely making heroic but futile gestures in order to salve our consciences.
Comrades, just as the October Revolution showed workers everywhere that another world is possible, the collapse of the Soviet Union set back the cause of human liberation by 30 years and more.
Who can forget that the global capitalist economy was in dire trouble in the 1980s? And who can forget that the imperialists were saved from their troubles by the unprecedented orgy of looting that followed the collapse of the USSR and the European people’s democracies? That they pillaged and grew fat on the wealth stolen from the proud peoples of the former socialist republics?
Who can forget the jubilation with which the USA declared itself to be the world’s only superpower and set out on a mission to stamp out every last shred of sovereignty and independence in the globe?
To the extent that the newly-emboldened rulers of the USA were able to launch their project for a ‘new American century’, it was as a result of the terrible blow that had been inflicted on the forces of socialism and anti-imperialist liberation. With supreme arrogance, the imperialists embarked on a carnival of destruction, starting in Yugoslavia and spreading out across Asia and Africa.
The death toll for all humanity following the loss of the USSR has not been computed, but when we consider all the dire consequences, from liberation struggles crushed and countries destroyed to the catastrophic fall in life expectancies and birth rates, there is no doubt it has been immense. And to this must be added the destruction of hard-won infrastructure, industry and agriculture, of whole economies razed to the ground and whole countries poisoned by chemical and nuclear weapons.
The imperialist-engendered famines and the waves of refugees sent flooding from these conflicts bear eloquent witness to the destructive savagery of the USA and Nato’s war machine.
To the extent that the imperialists failed in their mission to wipe out all centres of resistance to their domination, it was as a result of the legacy of October, which gave a signal to the peoples of the world that the time when colonial overlords would be tolerated was over. And the world has never been the same since.
Given that the USA and its allies could not beat the resistance in Afghanistan, where the technological level was so low and the poverty levels so high, it seems like insanity for the imperialists to be targeting Russia and China as they are currently doing – countries with the economic and technical strength to stand up for themselves and their allies. But the desperate need to find some way out of their economic crisis impels the monopoly financiers to drive towards war all the same.
Clearly, they hope that if they can set enough fires on the borders of Russia and China; can create enough proxy forces to drag them into endless conflict, they will be able to wear their opponents down before facing them openly; will be able to create unrest amongst the Russian and Chinese populations, and thus prepare the ground for regime change from within and without.
What is it ultimately that the imperialists want? They want free access to the wealth of the world, with no resistance from the peoples on or under whose lands this wealth resides. They want to destroy every government and movement that tries to defend its people against this piracy.
In particular, they want to destroy the sovereignty and independence of Russia and China, break them into pieces, loot their wealth and exploit their labour forces.
They want a repeat of the carnival they enjoyed after the fall of the USSR.
Such an outcome would once again set back the cause of socialism and liberation by 20, 30, 40 or even 50 years. Comrades, the world’s impoverished masses cannot be asked to endure such another torment!
That is why we say that this struggle we face now has reached a critical stage, and that it concerns the entire world. We must all of us recognise that there is one struggle and one enemy; that our fight is your fight and that your fight is ours.
The members of my party take great hope from all the signs that the world’s anti-imperialist forces are coming together in a way that has not been seen for 70 years. We take great hope from the initiative that has seen the forming of the World Anti-imperialist Platform, whose aim is to help forge that unity of purpose and action we so desperately need.
We welcome the role of the Platform in vigorously countering the imperialist war propaganda machine, which seeks to demonise the leadership of every country it targets, and to confuse and demoralise the working masses by turning our hatred of imperialism into a weapon against us. The branding of Russia, China and even Brazil and Venezuela as ‘imperialist’ countries is a major part of the psychological and ideological warfare that our enemies are waging, and it must be exposed and opposed.
If we can truly unite our activities around this central programme; if we can really come together to maximise our actions to disrupt and defeat the aggressive and criminal Nato imperialist bloc, then our victory is assured.

Unidos para ganar

Camaradas, este acontecimiento tiene lugar en un momento de crucial importancia para la lucha mundial contra el imperialismo.
Nuestra lucha es cada día más importante, ya que la gente de todo el mundo se enfrenta a la dura realidad de que simplemente no pueden obtener un suministro seguro de las necesidades básicas en las condiciones económicas actuales, por no hablar de ser capaces de lograr por sí mismos el disfrute pacífico de una vida útil y plena.
A los estimados delegados presentes en esta sala, les traigo saludos de Gran Bretaña, una de las potencias imperiales más antiguas y, en su momento, la más poderosa. En mi país, una pequeña clase de capitalistas financieros multimillonarios sigue obteniendo enormes beneficios utilizando la riqueza acumulada durante generaciones para seguir saqueando los recursos y explotando la fuerza de trabajo del planeta.
Sin embargo, en este mismo país, la masa de trabajadores pobres está sufriendo enormemente los efectos de la crisis económica mundial, una crisis que se ha visto exacerbada por la agresiva guerra económica y militar de nuestros gobernantes, y por su negativa a poner en marcha ninguna medida para ayudar a quienes están soportando el peso de una crisis que no han provocado.
Por supuesto, sabemos que el peso de esta crisis recae sobre todo en los más pobres de todo el mundo, al igual que recae sobre todo en los trabajadores más pobres de la sociedad británica. Sin embargo, tanto en Gran Bretaña como en el resto del mundo, el mismo mensaje se hace sentir cada día con mayor claridad: este sistema no se preocupa por ti; no puede ayudarte; hay que hacer algo.
Al estar hoy en Caracas, recordamos la larga historia de opresión -y resistencia- de los pueblos de su continente.
Recordamos los crímenes de los colonizadores de España, Portugal y Holanda, que fueron sustituidos a su vez por los imperialistas modernos, igualmente criminales y aún más despiadados: los capitalistas financieros de Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos.
En gran parte del mundo, Estados Unidos sólo se convirtió en el enemigo público número uno después de que dos guerras mundiales debilitaran fatalmente a las potencias de la vieja Europa. Incluso entonces, pasó algún tiempo antes de que muchas naciones recién liberadas comprendieran que los viejos imperios habían sido sustituidos por uno nuevo; antes de que detectaran el puñal a espaldas del gángster cuya mano parecía tendida en señal de amistad.
En esta parte del mundo, la historia es diferente. Aquí, la vida reveló hace tiempo el rostro fascista que se oculta bajo la máscara amante de la democracia del Tío Sam. Hace dos siglos, el presidente estadounidense James Monroe estableció su famosa doctrina para las Américas, reclamando para sus amos el derecho exclusivo a saquear y controlar los recursos y la política de cada parte del hemisferio occidental.
Desde aquel día hasta hoy, la historia de América Latina y el Caribe ha sido la historia de la subversión de la democracia y la negación de la voluntad popular.
Desde asesinatos hasta misteriosas enfermedades y accidentes aéreos; desde la compra o anulación de elecciones hasta el control de los medios de comunicación y las instituciones judiciales y militares; desde invasiones y ocupaciones directas hasta la financiación de mercenarios despiadados y apoderados para ahogar en sangre a los movimientos populares; desde el derrocamiento directo de gobiernos populares hasta su lento estrangulamiento mediante el bloqueo económico, Estados Unidos ha dejado claro que, mientras tenga el poder de prevalecer, a las masas de este continente no se les permitirá otra paz que la paz de la tumba.
¿Y con qué fin se dirigía todo esto? ¿Justificaba algún propósito humano superior estos implacables asaltos, este aparentemente interminable rastro de sufrimiento? No. Era sólo para asegurar y aumentar los beneficios de los monopolios estadounidenses: de la United Fruit Company, de Texaco, de Chevron, de Monsanto, de Pfizer.
Para tal fin, no hay coste humano que los imperialistas consideren demasiado grande. Comprender esta simple verdad es la clave para entender nuestras propias tareas. Debemos renunciar a la idea de persuadir o reformar a nuestros opresores. No es posible.
Marx explicó hace tiempo que, en el sistema económico actual, el capitalista se convierte en la personificación de su capital y actúa implacable y únicamente en su interés. No se puede apelar a él sobre la base de una lógica humana o racional.
¿Y qué es lo que desea su capital? Sólo expandirse. Que se le dé la oportunidad de explotar la fuerza de trabajo para obtener beneficios y crecer. Hoy, cuando los acopios de capital acumulado se han vuelto inimaginablemente vastos, la necesidad de seguir encontrando nuevas vías para su reinversión lleva a los propietarios de esos fondos de capital al frenesí.
Y mientras tanto, los gobernantes de nuestro mundo se enriquecen a costa del resto de la humanidad. Su alegría se construye sobre nuestra miseria, y han creado una enorme maquinaria de división y supresión del pueblo para mantener sus privilegios y su poder.
Hay que destruir su sistema económico y su maquinaria de represión.
Como socialista británico, represento a la parte de la clase obrera británica que ya está luchando por la liberación y el socialismo; que ha entendido este mensaje y está haciendo lo que puede para ayudar al resto de nuestra clase a entenderlo también.
Y, como socialistas que vivimos en el corazón del mundo imperialista, en el vientre de la bestia, recordamos las palabras del gran Lenin, ese maestro de la teoría y la práctica revolucionarias, cuyo partido bolchevique fue el primero en demostrar a la humanidad que los trabajadores podían organizarse en una fuerza verdaderamente independiente, que los imperialistas podían ser derrotados y que podía construirse un mundo nuevo.
Lenin nos enseñó que, en la lucha contra nuestros gobernantes imperialistas, debemos unirnos a los cientos de millones de pueblos oprimidos de todo el mundo que luchan contra el mismo enemigo. Insistió repetidamente en que nadie que reivindique el título de socialista puede faltar a este deber. Y la revolución rusa nos dio la prueba de que nuestra lucha será victoriosa si logramos este objetivo, y estará condenada a la derrota si no lo hacemos.
Amigos, no apoyamos las luchas de los demás por sentimientos de simpatía o caridad. No nos esforzamos por unirnos por humanitarismo, aunque sentimos profundamente nuestra humanidad común. Nos unimos unos a otros porque debemos hacerlo; porque nos enfrentamos al mismo enemigo y debemos luchar juntos si queremos luchar para vencer y no limitarnos a hacer gestos heroicos pero inútiles para tranquilizar nuestras conciencias.
Camaradas, así como la Revolución de Octubre mostró a los trabajadores de todo el mundo que otro mundo es posible, el colapso de la Unión Soviética hizo retroceder 30 años y más la causa de la liberación humana.
¿Quién puede olvidar que la economía capitalista mundial estaba en graves apuros en la década de 1980? ¿Y quién puede olvidar que los imperialistas se salvaron de sus problemas gracias a la orgía de saqueo sin precedentes que siguió al colapso de la URSS y de las democracias populares europeas? ¿Que saquearon y engordaron con la riqueza robada a los orgullosos pueblos de las antiguas repúblicas socialistas?
¿Quién puede olvidar el júbilo con el que los Estados Unidos se declararon la única superpotencia del mundo y emprendieron la misión de erradicar hasta la última pizca de soberanía e independencia del planeta?
En la medida en que los recién envalentonados gobernantes de EEUU pudieron lanzar su proyecto de un “nuevo siglo americano”, fue como resultado del terrible golpe que se había infligido a las fuerzas del socialismo y de la liberación antiimperialista. Con suprema arrogancia, los imperialistas se embarcaron en un carnaval de destrucción, que comenzó en Yugoslavia y se extendió por Asia y África.
No se ha calculado el número de muertos de toda la humanidad tras la pérdida de la URSS, pero si tenemos en cuenta todas las terribles consecuencias, desde las luchas de liberación aplastadas y los países destruidos hasta la catastrófica caída de la esperanza de vida y de las tasas de natalidad, no cabe duda de que ha sido inmenso. Y a ello hay que añadir la destrucción de infraestructuras, de la industria y de la agricultura que tanto costó conseguir, de economías enteras arrasadas y de países enteros envenenados por las armas químicas y nucleares.
Las hambrunas provocadas por el imperialismo y las oleadas de refugiados procedentes de estos conflictos son un testimonio elocuente del salvajismo destructivo de la maquinaria bélica de Estados Unidos y la OTAN.
En la medida en que los imperialistas fracasaron en su misión de acabar con todos los focos de resistencia a su dominación, fue como resultado del legado de Octubre, que dio una señal a los pueblos del mundo de que la época en que se toleraría a los señores coloniales había terminado. Y el mundo nunca ha vuelto a ser el mismo desde entonces.
Dado que Estados Unidos y sus aliados no pudieron vencer a la resistencia en Afganistán, donde el nivel tecnológico era tan bajo y los niveles de pobreza tan altos, parece una locura que los imperialistas apunten a Rusia y China como lo están haciendo actualmente, países con la fuerza económica y técnica para defenderse a sí mismos y a sus aliados. Pero la necesidad desesperada de encontrar una salida a su crisis económica impulsa a los monopolios financieros a la guerra.
Claramente, esperan que si pueden provocar suficientes incendios en las fronteras de Rusia y China; si pueden crear suficientes fuerzas interpuestas para arrastrarlas a un conflicto interminable, podrán desgastar a sus oponentes antes de enfrentarse a ellos abiertamente; podrán crear malestar entre las poblaciones rusa y china, y preparar así el terreno para un cambio de régimen desde dentro y desde fuera.
¿Qué es en definitiva lo que quieren los imperialistas? Quieren libre acceso a las riquezas del mundo, sin resistencia de los pueblos en cuyas tierras o bajo cuyas tierras residen estas riquezas. Quieren destruir todo gobierno y movimiento que intente defender a su pueblo contra esta piratería.
En particular, quieren destruir la soberanía y la independencia de Rusia y China, romperlas en pedazos, saquear sus riquezas y explotar su mano de obra.
Quieren que se repita el carnaval que disfrutaron tras la caída de la URSS.
Un resultado así haría retroceder una vez más la causa del socialismo y de la liberación 20, 30, 40 o incluso 50 años. Camaradas, ¡no se puede pedir a las masas empobrecidas del mundo que soporten otro tormento semejante!
Por eso decimos que esta lucha a la que nos enfrentamos ahora ha alcanzado una fase crítica, y que concierne al mundo entero. Todos debemos reconocer que hay una sola lucha y un solo enemigo; que nuestra lucha es vuestra lucha y que vuestra lucha es la nuestra.
Los miembros de mi partido albergan grandes esperanzas ante todas las señales de que las fuerzas antiimperialistas del mundo se están uniendo como no se había visto en 70 años. Tenemos grandes esperanzas en la iniciativa que ha visto la formación de la Plataforma Antiimperialista Mundial, cuyo objetivo es ayudar a forjar esa unidad de propósito y acción que tan desesperadamente necesitamos.
Acogemos con satisfacción el papel de la Plataforma para contrarrestar enérgicamente la maquinaria de propaganda de guerra imperialista, que pretende demonizar a los dirigentes de todos los países que son su objetivo, y confundir y desmoralizar a las masas trabajadoras convirtiendo nuestro odio al imperialismo en un arma contra nosotros. La calificación de Rusia, China e incluso Brasil y Venezuela como países “imperialistas” es una parte importante de la guerra psicológica e ideológica que libran nuestros enemigos, y debe ser denunciada y combatida.
Si realmente podemos unir nuestras actividades en torno a este programa central; si realmente podemos unirnos para maximizar nuestras acciones para desbaratar y derrotar al agresivo y criminal bloque imperialista de la OTAN, entonces nuestra victoria está asegurada.
